Exploring the Cyclic Flow of Time Through Chinese Characters

The 24 Solar Terms font application image design, created by Chia-Hui Lien, is a unique and innovative exploration of the cyclic flow of time through Chinese characters. Inspired by the ancient Chinese calendar, the design showcases the connection between the changing seasons and the strokes of Chinese characters.

The design takes the concept of cyclic time flow and translates it into the structure of Chinese characters. By breaking down the strokes into radicals and expressing them through lines, the design captures the essence of the 24 solar terms. The spatial expressions of the empty and the solid are put on display, representing the ever-changing nature of time.

One of the key strengths of this design is its ability to convey the sentiment of the solar terms through the crafting of dot, line, and plane patterns. Each rotation, turn, and placement of the lines and structures of the Chinese characters symbolizes the transition between "action" and "stillness" in accordance with the laws of the world.

The 24 Solar Terms font application image design is realized using special color printing in various applications such as posters, DM designs, and cards. The design utilizes textual font changes to create a visually striking representation of the solar terms. The specifications for the design include a poster size of W70XH100cm, DM design size of W21XH29.7cm, and card design size of W14.8XH21cm.

Chia-Hui Lien's design showcases the beauty and significance of Chinese characters in relation to the passage of time. By incorporating the principles of the 24 solar terms, the design pays homage to the ancient wisdom of the Huaxia forefathers and their understanding of the natural world.

The 24 Solar Terms font application image design was exhibited at the Kaohsiung Cultural Center in Taiwan from November 30th to December 11th, 2018. It is a testament to the designer's dedication to preserving and celebrating cultural heritage through innovative design.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2019. The award recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
